Deck & Fence Staining for a Range of Wood Conditions
Deck and fence staining projects can vary depending on wood age, exposure, and previous coatings. We stain both newly installed and weathered wood surfaces, adjusting preparation methods and stain systems to suit the condition of the material.
Whether the goal is to restore older wood, refresh an existing finish, or protect new construction, preparation and product selection are tailored so the stain absorbs evenly and performs as intended over time.
- New Wood Surfaces
Staining newly installed decks and fences after proper drying and conditioning.
- Weathered or Aged Wood
Restoring older wood through cleaning, brightening, and surface conditioning.
- Previously Coated Surfaces
Assessing existing stains or coatings to determine compatibility and prep needs.
- Residential Outdoor Structures
Decks, fences, railings, sheds, and related exterior wood features.
Proper Preparation Is Essential for Wood Staining
The performance and appearance of deck and fence stains depend heavily on surface condition. Before staining, wood is evaluated for previous coatings, UV damage, oxidation, and surface contamination that can interfere with stain absorption.
As required, preparation may include cleaning or power washing to remove dirt, mildew, and residue. For older or heavily weathered wood, a wood brightener may be used after cleaning to restore colour, neutralize the surface, and promote more even stain penetration.
Surfaces are allowed to dry thoroughly before staining begins. Additional preparation may include light sanding or surface conditioning to reduce raised grain and improve finish consistency.
Proper preparation helps prevent uneven absorption, premature failure, and blotchy appearance — allowing the stain system to perform as intended.
Throughout preparation and staining, surrounding areas are protected and work zones remain organized to minimize disruption to your property.
Preparation May Include:
- Cleaning or power washing (as required)
- Use of wood brightener on weathered surfaces
- Light sanding or surface conditioning
- Dry time prior to stain application
- Protection of landscaping and adjacent surfaces
What to Expect During a Deck or Fence Staining Project
1. Site Review, Scope, and Contract
We review wood condition, exposure, and previous coatings to determine appropriate preparation steps and product type.
2. Surface Preparation
Cleaning, wood brightening (when required), sanding, and protection are completed before stain application begins.
3. Stain Application
Stain is applied using methods suited to the product and surface, with attention to coverage, penetration, and consistency.
Depending on the project, this may include:
- Solid stain finishes
- Semi-solid stain finishes
- Semi-transparent stain finishes
- Clear or natural wood finishes
Each finish type offers different levels of colour, visibility of wood grain, and protection. Product selection is based on the condition of the wood and the desired appearance and performance.
4. Final Review & Cleanup
Once staining is complete, the work is reviewed and surrounding areas are cleaned and returned to order.
- Fully Insured for Residential Painting
General Liability Coverage & WSIB Coverage
